Ordering a Hawaiian Food Bowl at Waiāhole Poi Factory: Entrée Choices and What Comes With It

Not every Hawaiian food order needs to be a combination plate. Sometimes you already know which entrée you want and would rather enjoy it with rice.

That's where our Bowl comes in.

At Waiāhole Poi Factory, our Bowl lets you choose one entrée from four Hawaiian dishes, served with rice. It's a straightforward option for customers who want to focus on a particular dish without ordering a full plate combination.

Before ordering, it's helpful to understand which entrées are available, what comes with the Bowl, and how it differs from our other menu options.

What's Included in Our Hawaiian Food Bowl?

Our Bowl includes one selected entrée and rice.

You can choose from four options:

  • Beef Luau
  • Chicken Long Rice
  • Kalua Pig
  • Squid Luau

Each entrée offers a different combination of ingredients and flavors, so your choice depends on what you enjoy eating.

Unlike our Single Plate and Combo Plate, the Bowl is not listed with Lomi Salmon or Haupia included.

The other important detail is that our Bowl comes with rice only. Poi is not offered as a replacement for rice in this menu category.

If you'd prefer a meal that includes poi, our Single Plate and Combo Plate offer a choice between rice and poi.

You can see the full selection on our Hawaiian food menu.

Choosing Your Bowl Entrée

The easiest way to choose a Bowl is to start with the main dish.

Each of our four Bowl entrées is prepared differently, so understanding the ingredients can help you decide what to order.

Kalua Pig Bowl

If you enjoy pork, Kalua Pig is one option to consider.

Our Kalua Pig is made using pork butt that we slow-cook and smoke for twelve hours. We then shred the pork and season it with Hawaiian sea salt.

The preparation gives the meat its characteristic shredded texture and savory flavor.

When ordered as a Bowl, Kalua Pig is served with rice.

This option may appeal to customers who prefer a pork entrée without the additional components of a full plate.

Chicken Long Rice Bowl

Chicken Long Rice is different from the other Bowl choices because it combines chicken, rice noodles, and broth.

Our Chicken Long Rice includes chicken and rice noodles served in a ginger and chicken broth.

Despite its name, the dish contains noodles rather than ordinary long-grain rice.

When you choose Chicken Long Rice as your Bowl entrée, the Bowl still comes with rice according to our published menu.

That means you're choosing a noodle-based dish as your entrée alongside the rice included with the Bowl.

If you enjoy ginger-flavored chicken broth and tender noodles, Chicken Long Rice may be worth trying.

Beef Luau Bowl

Our Beef Luau is a Hawaiian stew made with beef chuck, onions, ginger, and taro leaves.

We slow-cook the ingredients until the beef and taro leaves become tender.

Unlike Kalua Pig, which features shredded pork, Beef Luau is a stew with a different consistency.

The combination of beef, cooked taro leaves, and ginger gives the dish its savory character.

Ordering it as a Bowl lets you enjoy Beef Luau with rice rather than selecting it as part of a larger plate.

Squid Luau Bowl

Squid Luau is another taro-leaf dish on our menu, but its ingredients differ from Beef Luau.

Our published menu describes Squid Luau as thinly sliced octopus combined with slowly cooked taro leaves, coconut milk, and Hawaiian sea salt.

The coconut milk contributes to the dish's creamy consistency.

Although its menu name is Squid Luau, the published description identifies octopus as the protein.

If you're choosing between Beef Luau and Squid Luau, the main distinction is the combination of ingredients.

Beef Luau uses beef chuck, onions, and ginger with taro leaves. Squid Luau combines its seafood ingredients with coconut milk and taro leaves.

Both can be selected as a Bowl entrée.

Comparing the Four Bowl Choices

If you're still deciding, this comparison highlights what makes each entrée different.

Bowl choice Main ingredients What to expect
Kalua Pig Slow-cooked smoked pork, Hawaiian sea salt Shredded pork with a savory flavor
Chicken Long Rice Chicken, rice noodles, ginger broth A noodle-based chicken dish
Beef Luau Beef chuck, taro leaves, onions, ginger A slow-cooked beef and taro-leaf stew
Squid Luau Seafood described as octopus, taro leaves, coconut milk A creamy coconut-based taro-leaf dish

All four are listed as Bowl options.

If one of these dishes is unfamiliar, choosing a Bowl can be a way to concentrate on that entrée instead of selecting several different dishes at once.

Can You Order Laulau as a Bowl?

Laulau is one of the dishes we serve at Waiāhole Poi Factory, but it is not listed among our Bowl entrée options.

Our Laulau consists of pork and a touch of butterfish wrapped and steamed in taro leaves.

If you'd like Laulau as your main entrée, you can select it as part of a Single Plate or Combo Plate.

It's also available separately on our sides menu.

This distinction matters when you're deciding what to order. Our Bowl has four specific entrée choices, while our Single Plate and Combo Plate include Laulau among their selections.

Hawaiian Food Bowl vs. Single Plate: What's the Difference?

Both options allow you to choose one entrée, but they are not the same meal.

The differences involve the available entrées, the starch choice, and the included sides.

Feature Bowl Single Plate
Number of entrées One One
Entrée selections Four choices Five choices, including Laulau
Rice Included Available as a choice
Poi instead of rice Not offered Available
Lomi Salmon Not listed as included Included
Haupia Not listed as included Included

If you want one of the four Bowl entrées with rice, the Bowl may fit what you're looking for.

If you want poi instead of rice, prefer Laulau, or would like the included Lomi Salmon and Haupia, a Single Plate is the more appropriate choice.

You can compare the options on our official menu.

What If You Want to Try Two Entrées?

If you're deciding between two dishes and don't want to choose just one, consider our Combo Plate.

The Combo Plate lets you select two entrées from Beef Luau, Chicken Long Rice, Kalua Pig, Laulau, and Squid Luau.

It also includes your choice of rice or poi, along with Lomi Salmon and Haupia.

For example, you could choose Kalua Pig and Chicken Long Rice, or try Beef Luau alongside Laulau.

The Combo Plate is a different option from purchasing a Bowl because it provides two entrées and additional included items.

If you already know your preferred dish, the Bowl keeps the order focused on one entrée.

If you're interested in variety, the Combo Plate provides more selections in one meal.
