If you've looked at our dessert menu and wondered what Banana Poʻe is, you're not alone. It's a dessert that may be unfamiliar to visitors exploring the foods of Hawaiʻi and the wider Pacific.
Banana poʻe is a traditional Tahitian banana pudding. At Waiāhole Poi Factory, we feature it in our Tahitian Sweet Lady, which combines warm Banana Poʻe with haupia-flavored ice cream.
If you're deciding between our two Sweet Lady desserts, understanding the difference between banana poʻe and kūlolo can help you choose.
What Is Banana Poʻe?
Banana poʻe, sometimes written as banana po'e, is a traditional dessert associated with Tahitian and French Polynesian cooking.
It is typically prepared using bananas and starch to create a thick pudding. Traditional versions are commonly served with coconut milk, giving the dessert a combination of banana sweetness and coconut richness.
Unlike an ordinary banana cake, banana poʻe is known for its pudding-like consistency. Its texture can vary depending on the preparation, but it is generally firmer and denser than a spoonable custard.
Bananas provide the dessert's main flavor, while the starch helps create its distinctive consistency.
The dish reflects the importance of familiar ingredients such as bananas and coconut in Pacific Island food traditions.
While our restaurant focuses on traditional Hawaiian cuisine, our Tahitian Sweet Lady also offers guests a way to enjoy a dessert with roots elsewhere in Polynesia.
What Does Banana Poʻe Taste Like?
Banana poʻe has a naturally recognizable banana flavor, with a sweetness that depends on the bananas and the preparation.
Its taste is different from desserts built around chocolate or dairy-based custards. The banana remains central, while the pudding texture gives it a more substantial bite.
If you're trying banana poʻe for the first time, here's what you can generally expect:
- Banana-forward flavor: The fruit gives the pudding its recognizable taste.
- Dense pudding texture: It holds together more firmly than a loose custard.
- Coconut pairing: Traditional versions are often enjoyed with coconut milk, which complements the banana.
At our restaurant, we serve warm Banana Poʻe with haupia ice cream, adding a creamy coconut-flavored element to the dessert.
That combination is what makes it our Tahitian Sweet Lady.
How We Serve the Tahitian Sweet Lady
Our Tahitian Sweet Lady brings together two components: warm Banana Poʻe and haupia-flavored ice cream.
Rather than serving the banana pudding alone, we pair it with ice cream so you can enjoy the contrast between the warm pudding and the cold topping.
As the ice cream begins to soften, it adds a creamy texture to the banana dessert.
Our official dessert menu lists two serving options:
Warm Banana Poʻe with two scoops of haupia ice cream
Both options feature the same banana pudding base. The difference is the number of ice cream scoops.
If you're ordering for yourself, the single option is a straightforward place to start. If you prefer more ice cream with your dessert, the double offers an additional scoop.
Tahitian Sweet Lady vs. Sweet Lady of Waiahole
Both Sweet Lady desserts are served warm with haupia-flavored ice cream, but their pudding bases are different.
Our original Sweet Lady of Waiahole features house-made kūlolo, a traditional Hawaiian taro pudding prepared using taro root, coconut milk, and sugar. We steam our kūlolo for 24 hours.
The Tahitian Sweet Lady uses Banana Poʻe instead.
Here's the difference:
Choose the Tahitian Sweet Lady if you enjoy banana desserts
If you prefer the recognizable sweetness of bananas, the Tahitian Sweet Lady may be more appealing.
The warm Banana Poʻe provides the fruit-based pudding, while the haupia ice cream adds a coconut-flavored topping.
It's a useful choice for someone interested in exploring a Polynesian dessert beyond the more familiar Hawaiian pudding options.
Choose the Sweet Lady of Waiahole if you want to try kūlolo
Our signature Sweet Lady of Waiahole centers on kūlolo rather than banana.
Kūlolo has an earthy taro flavor and a dense texture that distinguishes it from fruit-based puddings.
If you want to understand kūlolo before ordering, our guide to its taste and texture provides more background.
Neither dessert requires you to be familiar with its ingredients beforehand. The difference comes down to whether you're more interested in banana pudding or taro pudding.
What Is Haupia Ice Cream?

Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut dessert. Our menu describes haupia as a light coconut pudding with a custard-like consistency.
Haupia ice cream takes that familiar coconut flavor into a frozen dessert.
We use haupia-flavored ice cream as the topping for both Sweet Lady options.
In the Tahitian Sweet Lady, the coconut flavor complements the banana pudding. In the Sweet Lady of Waiahole, it accompanies the taro-based kūlolo.
You can also order haupia ice cream separately from our dessert menu.
This gives you another option if you'd like to enjoy the coconut flavor without ordering either warm pudding dessert.
Can You Try Other Traditional Desserts With Your Hawaiian Meal?
Our menu includes several dessert options, each offering a different introduction to the ingredients used in Hawaiian and Polynesian sweets.
Alongside the Tahitian Sweet Lady, we offer:
Sweet Lady of Waiahole: Our signature dessert of warm, house-made kūlolo topped with haupia ice cream.
Kulolo: A traditional Hawaiian taro pudding prepared with taro root, coconut milk, and sugar. Our menu lists individual scoops and pound purchases when available.
Haupia: A coconut pudding that is also included with our Single Plate, Combo Plate, and Kanaka Nui.
Haupia Ice Cream: Coconut-flavored ice cream available separately or as part of our Sweet Lady desserts.
